Social Groups
Do you want to have fun, do different activities and make friends? Come and join our social groups! We have several social groups for young people aged 16-29, or for adults aged 18+. They are open to people with learning disabilities and those who are autistic. We do different activities in different venues chosen by members. Popular choices include bowling, meals out, trampolining, pool, and laser quest, but we always love to hear new ideas and take part in new activities! Being part of a group is about developing yourself and becoming more independent, while having fun and making new friends.
Teens & Twenties Groups
We have five social groups each week for young people aged 16-29. These run 6.30-8.30pm Monday–Thursday and 11am–1pm on Saturday. The T&T groups have a break over the Christmas, Easter, and summer holidays. Instead of the usual weekly activities, the groups go on trips to do activities such as visiting the seaside, aquariums, the theatre, picnics, and indoor sledging, just to name a few. They also sometimes do workshops in art, drama, relationship courses etc, or have group parties. As well as this, we run residentials in which members take part in archery, climbing walls, zip wires, and canoeing. The Teens and Twenties groups are funded by the Big Lottery Fund so there is no membership fee, just pay as you go for activities you take part in!
Adult Groups
We have two social groups for adults aged 18+. They run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7-9pm. These run every week, except for a break over Christmas. Every year members attend our Christmas party and the pantomime. These groups are partially funded by Positive Changes. As they are not fully funded, there is a monthly membership fee to attend these groups.
How they work
Each group is supported by experienced staff including a group leader, assistant, and sometimes volunteers. You can come alone or with your own support. The weekly activities are all based in Leeds but the venue changes each week- it could be Kirstall, Leeds City Centre, Elland Road etc. All of our social groups are member led. This means group members choose what they want to do and where they meet. Every six weeks members will discuss what they would like to do during the next six weeks and then the group leader will put together a programme to share with group members. Often group members will communicate via WhatsApp during the week, and a text reminder is sent each week to members about that week’s activity.
How to Join
If you are interested in joining one of our social groups, email info@peoplemattersleeds.co.uk or contact us on 0113 234 6896. Our Social Groups Coordinator will then arrange a meeting with you. You will need to complete a membership form; we like to do this together so we can get to know you. If you would like to, you can ask your parent/carer to help as well.
